Mental Depression

The words 'mental depression' have scared the daylights out of people for ages. When you infuse the word mental into any illness it encourages some to believe that one has lost their mind. This is of course untrue. Mental depression is a mental illness but it does not mean that you are crazy. You have to free yourself from the age-old stereotype that has been associated with mental illness since the beginning of time. Yes mental depression is a disease of the mind but it is a disease that can be treated effectively and you do not have to feel abnormal or inferior to other human beings.

Over 15 million Americans will be affected by mental depression this year alone. Unfortunately only a third of those will ever seek treatment because they are ashamed to admit they are suffering. Your health has to be the primary concern. If you are afflicted by mental depression you cannot wish it away. This illness will not be ignored. It can affect anyone, anywhere at any time. It does not concern itself to race or religion. It will not take into consideration if you are rich or poor.

It does not care if you are young or old. This disease has no boundaries. As with any disease early detection is beneficial to treatment. However, mental depression is complicated and not easy to detect. Everyone is down from time to time. Mental depression is not a temporary affliction.

There are a variety of symptoms that may indicate mental depression. Those that are suffering may tend to become loners. They may not find any enjoyment in activities that once comforted them. Sleeping habits can alter and anxiety may increase as well. The eating habits may change. The ability to deal with those around them may be impaired.

They can suffer many bouts of hopelessness and helplessness. Their emotional and physical health will begin to show wear and tear. They can be suffering from mental depression and not even realize it. Sometimes we have to realize it for them.

Depression is caused by a variety of possibilities. There is little doubt that 'stress' plays a major role. Stress can be brought on from many factors as well. There is stress in relationships, stress at work and stress about the ability to provide for your family. There is also stress from losing someone you love. In many cases it is believed that mental depression can be passed on genetically. There are many possible causes of depression. There are also quite a few options for treatment.

One typical treatment revolves around 'talk therapy'. This allows those that suffer to talk out their problems and look for positive reinforcement. There are also medications like anti-depressants and natural herbs that have been proven effective as well. Mental depression is a disease that can be cured if treated.
